Leaf quickly climbed up the tree. Her small heart beating frantically. She had been chased by a cat. A large, dark grey one. She turned her head and looked behind her. She just caught the glimpse of the cat's tail disappearing into the brush. She heaved a sigh and turned back to get even higher into the giant Oak.

Blaze had been leaning against the thick trunk of the Great Oak. The russet colored squirrel with mixed up fur looked curiousely at Leaf as she scampered past. He bounded on to a higher branch and looked at her, puzzled. "What's wrong, Leaf?"

Leaf blinked. She didn't notice Blaze sitting there before. "I-I got ch-chased by a c-cat," she stuttered, he teeth clacking together. Her heart slowly clamed down and her breathing came easier. She suppressed a shudder and sat down on the same branch as Blaze. She stared into the brush where the cat had disappeared.

"I don't see you bleeding to death so I assume you're alright." Blaze scurried up to her, sniffing her cautiously. "And you don't look wounded. Good. Very good. So what the heck did you do to that cat? Maybe it wanted to eat you. My sister was eaten by one."

"I was just exploring and then the cat came out of nowhere. It chased me for awhile but I was faster, luckily." She explained. "I guess I should have been more alert, but since I came from the mountains I'm usually being chased by birds and then the cats get the birds." She looked sadly at Blaze. "I'm really sorry for your loss Blaze."

"It's fine." Blaze chirped. "I've heard of the mountains. They don't sound too nice. I mean, no nuts to eat? Birds everywhere?" he twitched his bushy tail. "Hey, do you need a place to stay for the night?" he motioned with his muzzle towards a charred hole in the edge of the tree where he lived.

"Thanks." Leaf forced a weak smile to form on her muzzle. "I loved the mountains. I miss them. Hmm..." An idea had formed in her head. "I think I'll make a visit there oneday. Would.. um.. would you like to come with me?" She offered. Leaf knew that he'd probably say no but it was polite to ask. "But if yo don't want to thats ok," she added.

Blaze shrugged. "Sure! Anyways, come on in." he scurried down the branch and leaped towards the hole. He flung himself in and darted down the tall hole in the tree. Not waiting for her to come in, the multicolored squirrel scuttled against the wall until he found a small hole. Blaze darted in to it and saw, in awe, his huge stash of nuts. Hearing her call, he hollered back. "In here." scurrying out, he motioned towards it. "If you're hungry, there's food in there that I've stored."

"Thanks Blaze. For everything. You're a very good friend," Leaf chirped. She sat down and looked around at his home "It's very nice here," she added complementary.

"Thank you! Carved most of the hollows myself." Blaze proudly nodded, blinking. "And it's no trouble letting you stay here." He paused to twiddle his food quickly. "As long as you need to!"

Leaf nodded. "Well you certainly did a wonderful job Blaze," she chirped, looking around. "Thank you again Blaze. You have no clue how greatful I am to have you as a friend." She slowly nibbled on her food, thinking of what her family would say when they saw her again, alive. She shuddered. She had left them, because she had been accused. Leaf didn't know why. She felt some moisture dwell up in her eyes and she raised her paw to wipe the tears away before Blaze could see.

Blaze turned to see Leaf shaking her head and wiping away tears. "What's wrong?" he angled his head with curiosity. He didn't want her to feel sad. "Leaf, are you alright?"

"Y-yes," Leaf stuttered. She didn't want to tell him. She didn't want him to not be her friend anymore. She has had only two friends in her life. Russet and him. She looked up to see his anxious eyes staring at her. She forced a small smiled onto her muzzle. "Everything's Ok. I'll tell you another time if things don't go to good when we go on our journey..." She let the sentence hang there, telling him she wouldn't say any more.

"Okay." Blaze unsurely said. "Want to leave tomorrow? Tonight we'll eat most of this to store up."

"Um... Ok," Leaf said. "But remember you don't have to come." Then she breathed,"Maybe it would be better if you didnt come." Then more loudly she chirped," Blaze really thank you but..." She stood up, unsure of what to say. She didn't want to hurt his feelings but she didn't want any of her friends hurt period.
