Book 1: The Kits
The silver kit with mahogany stripes leaped on top of her playmate. “Rawr!” she growled, bubbling with laughter. A purr of protest came form the attacked, a tom with green eyes and other shades of yellow in his golden pelt.
“No fair!” he hissed as his day-older friend dug at his soft kit-fur.
“Learn to respect your leader, Wildkit!” the silver kit yowled.
“But you’re stronger, bigger, and older than me, Hawkkit!” Wildkit pointed out.
“Hawkstar,” the silver kit corrected.
“Whatever,” Wildkit grumbled, kicking out his back legs and sending Hawkkit flying through the air. “I’m going to visit Orangepaw and Mousepaw.”
Hawkkit felt stung. She knew that both she and Wildkit were too young to care about mates and stuff like that, but it seemed like the three-moon-older apprentices wanted to spend all of their time with Wildkit, not doing their duties. And Wildkit seemed to like all of the attention. After all, he was an adorable kit with a humorous and charming personality. Every cat seemed to at least like him.
Bored and angry, the little kit began to pretend she was leader again. She mouthed words and yowls and jumped on and fought imaginary cats.
It was dark and the sun was setting by the time Wildkit returned. “That was fun!” the little kit declared.
“Oh yeah? Just wait and see what fun is!” she grumbled, padding away and getting as Wildkit as possible.
“Hawkkit?” Wildkit mewed uncertainly. “What’s wrong?” Getting no answer, Wildkit sighed ad curled up next to her, hoping that his unpredictable playmate wouldn’t be mad.
Hawkkit shook her almost-tortoiseshell pelt when she woke up. Noticing Wildkit, she felt a pang of…love? Strong emotion, whatever it was! “Wildkit!” she meowed, prodding the tom with one paw. The cat snored on. “Look, Orangepaw!” she meowed loudly, hoping to wake her friend.
“Where?” the cat rose, wildly looking around.
“Ooh, Wildkit’s in love!” Hawkkit teased, even though she felt a tad of jealousy.
“I am not!” Wildkit retorted defensively.
“Sure, whatever! I believe you…NOT!” Hawkkit mewed affectionately, running her tail down his back.
Wildkit flinched, stung, then realized, She must be jealous. I’ve always loved her first. Feeling bad, he mewed, “I’m sorry Hawkkit. It won’t be over between us. I promise.”
“That’s okay.” Hawkkit meowed. “Us kits-even the apprentices-are too young for real relationships.” She added, surprising herself as much as Wildkit at how much she sounded like a leader.
