The day was at it's prime and the sun shone high above the sky. The heat was intense and patrols were departing to hunt. Elders were complaining about ticks and apprentices were rushing around to soothe them. Snowfire had just arrived back from a dawn patrol with Flamefur. He had caught a couple beefy water voles and decided on feeding the Clan with them, since he had enjoyed a plump fish before departing. As the sleek white tom dropped the juicy voles on the fresh kill pile, he heard the elders complaining even more. "For crying out loud, Sunsetpaw! Hurry up and finish! This smell is horrible!" Snowfire spotted Sunsetpaw hurriedly rubbing mouse bile over the elders. He glared at the elder who had made the rude comment. "Leave the apprentice alone! We've all had a busy day. Sunsetpaw, once you finish this elder, you may take a break and have some fresh kill." he offered.

"Thanks." Sunsetpaw said to Snowfire. She hurried very quickly, and soon went over to the fresh kill pile. She looked at the charming white warrior from the corner of her eye. She admired him, and... liked him. She didn't know if she could tell him, though, or if he even liked her.

Snowfire nodded. "Anytime. Elders can be a bit mouse-brained after being retired so long." he meowed, chuckling. "So how have you been doing?" the white warrior asked, tilting his head curiousely. The glint of light catching on Sunsetpaw's fur made her look esceedingly beautiful.

"Ok," Sunsetpaw replied. "I'm not that great at hunting yet. But I'm improving." She looked at Snowfire. "How about you?" Snowfire's pelt caught the sun in just the right way. She did like him, but she was an apprentice, while he was a warrior. It couldn't be.

"That's good, that you're improving. I'm doing well. The warrior's den is pretty empty since Flamefur often is with Hawkstar and Eaglestripe stays up late. Plus they are all busy mentors. I can't wait for you to become a warrior." he meowed.

"The apprentice den is usually pretty empty too, since most of the apprentices are training, hunting, or tending to the elders. It's tiring." Sunsetpaw looked at the white warrior closely. "I was wondering, were you born here, or..." She trailed off, lost. She hoped that she didn't seem mean or anything to the handsome warrior.

"I admit, I wasn't Clan born. When I was a young kittypet my Twoleg caught me leaving the yard and never let me out again. He took me to another Twoleg (who tried to spay him) but I ran away before they could harm me. I slipped and fell in to the river and Redstripe grabbed my scruff and pulled me out. She taught me to swim and I joined RiverClan the day you were born." he meowed. "It's no offence at all. No one can choose their family or where they are born."

"Yeah." Sunsetpaw said, thoughtful. "Did you know that my mother, Redstripe, wasn't clan born either? She was born a kittypet too." Sunsetpaw stopped, feeling embarressed. "I-" She couldn't say anymore. She felt faint, but why, she didn't know. She did know one thing: She really loved Snowfire, though why was beyond her.

"All my life cats have never trusted me. I feel that Hawkstar and Flamefur haven't accepted me..." he broke off, closing his eyes. "Sunsetpaw-" he murmured under his breath. He had to use all his power to stop from telling her. She's too young, he thought. Just an apprentice....

"What?" Sunsetpaw said gently. She looked at him kindly. "Well... I accept you. And I'm sure my mother accepts you. I don't care where a cat comes from." She stopped. She looked into the warrior's eyes. "I- I- I love you!" She suddenly blurted out, and she started to cry.

"Sunsetpaw.... I couldn't have said it better!" he meowed in a desperate sort of voice. "I know you're young.... but the day you become a warrior, will you be my mate?" he meowed.

Sunsetpaw looked into Snowfire's eyes. "Yes!" She said happily. She rubbed up against him, purring. "I love you, and no one else."

The hot sun burned down on Snowfire's white pelt. Now, cats would trust him. At least Redstripe and her daughter trusted him. "Would you like to go hunting? Your mentor is probably on the Evening patrol and might be resting." he meowed.

"Sure!" She said, purring still.
Redstripe got up from where she had been watching her daughter with Snowfire. She sighed. It was a lot like her and Sunhawk when they first realized they loved each other. And she knew who Snowfire's parents were.
