Flamefur padded up to Cloudpaw. They were at the edge of the camp and Flamefur knew that his apprentice was ready. "Cloudpaw, today you'll have your assessment." he meowed.
Cloudpaw nodded solemnly.
"It's dawn and you'll be hunting until twilight. Keep your guard up and come back the moment you cannot see your ow prey. You may begin." he said.
Cloudpaw snuck through the shrubs and marshland. It was still dark out and he had to squint to see. Opening his jaws and scanning the area like a radar, he snapped them shut and dropped in to a hunter's crouch after a rabbit.
Flamefur grinned from some nearby bushes. Snowfire was watching from across the clearing, he too hiding. Both toms had rolled in mud to disguise their scents. At Flamefur's key, they would both lunge out at an attack.
After Cloudpaw had killed the young rabbit and a nearby water vole, Flamefur yowled a strange battle cry and both cats leaped out.
Cloudpaw stood and stared in shock for a moment before glaring and pouncing on to Snowfire. He landed squarely on the tom's shoulders and kicked Flamefur away from him. Snowfire reared on to his hind paws but Cloudpaw dug his claws in to the white tom's back, keeping him on. The apprentice released himself and ran in between Snowfire's legs. The warrior was unbalanced and fell.
Flamefur sunk his teeth in to his apprentice's tail but made sure not to make it too dangerous a wound. As he was letting go Cloudpaw faked going limp. Lying on the ground and holding his breath, the apprentice looked lifeless. The ginger tom was worried for a second and backed off but Cloudpaw leaped back up and sunk his teeth in to Flamefur's shoulder. The ginger tom collapsed beside Snowfire in defeat and both warriors ran in to the shrubs.
Cloudpaw looked like he would go after them for a second but he just buried his prey and started stalking a water vole.
A little way away, Flamefur and Snowfire washed off the mud. "Great job!" Flamefur congratulated the white tom. Snowfire dipped his head in a thanks and replied. "We should probably go rest. I don't have any wounds worth bothering Leafpool over."
Flamefur nodded in agreement. "Me, neither. I'll gather Cloudpaw's prey so far and bring it back."
Cloudpaw had soon caught three rabbits, a thrush, and two water voles. It was just past sunhigh and he still had more than half a day to finish. The tired apprentice scented the air and started to stalk another rabbit.
Flamefur awoke in camp a while later. It was twilight and he still hadn't gotten Cloudpaw's prey! Where was the apprentice?
As Flamefur was worrying about all the things he hadn't done, Cloudpaw came in to camp with four rabbits hanging from his jaws by their ears and a thrush wrapped in his tail. He had dried blood on his paws and a bite mark in his tail but he was proudly brandishing four water voles on his back.
"Cloudpaw! Are you alright?" Flamefur meowed.
The apprentice cheerfully nodded. "A couple of rogues attacked me but I fought them off. I also got all this prey!" he dropped it on the fresh kill pile.
Flamefur looked proudly at Cloudpaw. He would finally become a warrior!
