Midnightstar crouched onto the earth slowly creeping forward. "Follow me as I go, and when I leap, you leap, doing whatever moved I make," she whispered, crawling toward a shrew nibbling at a blade of grass. Keeping the corner of her eyes on the two apprentices all the while, she leapt, landing skillfully on the prey. She decided to put a trick into the catch, and swatted the prey into the air, hooking it on a claw before slamming it down hard, crushing the prey. She watched as the appretnices attemped to follow her movements.

(cedarpaw and brindlepaw character) The two apprentices copied Midnightstar as well as they could. But when Midnightstar swatted the prey into the air Brindlepaw and Cedarpaw fumbled around because they had nothing to swat into the air. "Humph," meowed Brindlepaw.

Midnightstar chuckled, her eyes glimmering with kind amusement. "Nice try! When you swat, you have to hold your balance on your hind paws, and raise your paw as you fling it. Try with some real prey now," she instructed, still smiling.

(Brindlepaw character) Cedarpaw and Brindlepaw looked at Midnightstar. Then they turned around in search of some prey nearby. Brindlepaw was the first to spot a mouse scurrying in some leaves at a base of a tree. The young she-cat padded forward in the hunters crouch, when she leapt she made sure not to dig her claws into the mouses body. Just as Midnightstar had done the young she-cat swatted the prey into the air and then pushed it into the ground killing it. Brindlepaws eyes gleamed with satisfaction.

"Wonderful catch Brindlepaw! Why don't you catch one more peice of fresh kill so Cedarpaw can try out the trick."

(cedarpaw and brindlepaw character) "OK," meowed Brindlepaw cheerfully. As she searched for some more prey the russet colored she cat found a squirrel nibbling on an acorn nearby. Carefully she dropped into the hunters crouch and padded up two more steps. When she was a few mouse-lengths away she leapt and landing squarely on top of it she flung out with her claws and hooked the creature right out from under her and nipped it on the neck. After Brindlepaw caught the squirrel it was Cedarpaws turn. The young tom turned around because right behind him a few fox-lengths away a starling sat there pecking in the ground for a worm. He carefully turned around and padding up carefully he leapt. He zoned out the bird and when he flung it into the air he pushed it down into the ground.

"Good job Cedarpaw! You both did wonderful! Gather your prey and we'll head back to camp, and maybe do some battle training in the hollow tomorrow at dawn. Lets hurry now!" And with that they gathered the prey and headed back to camp.
