Vixen opened one eye. She was used to the smell of Dock leaves that stuck to the walls of her den and the poppy seed power that stuck to the air.
But Vixen missed Wolfpaw. He had come to visit her a lot but it wasn't the same.

Wolfpaw sat in the moonlight of the midnight sky. He curlced his tail around his paws, sighing. He was very happy that Vixen had become a medicine cat, but he missed her. Even with him visiting her at least twice a day, he didn't feel the same. The thought of going to see her blew through his mind, but deciding she was probably sleeping, he sat still and gazed up toward the star-studded sky, forcing himself to lets thoughts of her fullfill his mind.

Finally, Vixen couldn't stand lying there in the moonlight any longer. She snuck out of the medicine cat's den and slipped towards the edge of the apprentice's den. "Wolfpaw!" she whispered urgently. "Come on! Follow me!" She started towards the edge of a beautiful stream near the camp, hoping he would follow.

"Vixen!" He called quietly, his eyes sparkling. "I thought you were sleeping," he whispered once he had padded up next to her. He smiled down at her, his mixed pelt gleaming in the moonlight.

Vixen's eyes glittered with shyness, embarrassment, and cheer. "I couldn't sleep... I missed you." she sighed. Her mind floated back to the pretty, snobby she-cat Sparklepaw. She had often flirted with Wolfpaw while Vixen was busy tending to other cats.
"Will you be my mate... in secret?" she blurted.

Wolfpaw nearly jumped out of his claws with excitement. (*laughing out loud!*).
"Of course!" He purred, his eyes sparkling. He glanced around, making sure no one else was around. "What happens if someone finds out?" He whispered. "I mean, Leafpool hadn't been tormented for having a mate, and Yellowfang hadn't either, at least thats what I heard when I was in the nursery." He was worried about his new mate and how it was against the code.
"I love you Vixen, but I don't want you to be hurt," he meowed, a frown creasing on his sleek muzzle. "Are you sure your okay with this?"

"Of course! The only problem is if Sparklepaw wants you to be her mate. You'd need a reason to say no." Vixen sighed. "I love you, Wolfpaw. I'm not going to let anyone find out!"

Wolfpaw smiled. "And I won't either." he said determinedly. "If Sparklepaw asks, I'll say..." He thought for a moment. "Well first off, I could say that I'm just an apprentice still, and its against the code to have mates. And second, when I become a warrior and she asks me again, I could say I'm not ready." He lifted his chin, determined not to let anything get between him and Vixen.
