Russetwhisker swallowed her bite of prey and glanced sideways at Dandyheart. He was normally a talkative, charismatic warrior, but at the moment he seemed to be drifting into his thoughts. "You okay?" She meowed, her whiskers twitching with concern for her friend. For just a moment, familiar images flashed through her mind. A dark ginger apprentice stood by a patch of nightshade, angry at the world, wanting to end it all. A popular tom and his friend shamelessly flirted, oblivious to the she-cat nearby. The same tom having to choose... choosing... choosing... Russetwhisker shivered. She remembered her obsessive crush on Dandyheart from when she was a kit, and how he had favored Fizzletail. Those two... looking back at it, Russetwhisker felt foolish. They belonged together. Was that what he was thinking about? Would he rather be with Fizzletail right now?

Flicking his tail Dandyheart nodded. "Ya, I'm fine," he mewed. Clearing his throat he continued in a rush,"Russetwhisker I was wondering if you'd be my mate?" He looked down at his paws, awaiting her answer. Please don't let her say no, he prayed silently to StarClan.

Russetwhisker flicked her tail in thought at her friend's words. Something was surely bothering him. She didn't have to wait long to find out what it was. His question caught her off guard, and the ginger she-cat felt her heart skip a beat. "What- Dandyheart- I..." she stuttered, but before he could react, she got back under control and spoke again. "I thought you and Fizzletail..."

"Fizzletail and I.... well lets just say... it didn't work between us," Dandyheart mewed. Raising his head, Dandyheart looked at Russetwhisker. She was clearly shocked at his sudden outburst. But was that good... or bad?

Say yes, say yes, say yes... Russetwhisker's consciousness urged her to accept. This was the cat she had crushed on ever since she was a kit, the one she had spent nights thinking about, the one she had dreamed about having as her mate. Now that she thought about it, her actions had been immature and selfish- and the slightest bit stalker-ish, too. But now he wanted to be her mate. Fizzletail was out of the picture... that was good, right? "I don't know," The ginger she-cat admitted sadly. "I-" she paused. The next few words could make or break their friendship. "I don't want to be anyone's second choice."

Dandyheart stared open-mouthed at Russetwhisker. He could literally feel his heart breaking into pieces. Looking away from Russetwhisker, Dandyheart pelted out of the camp, his paws slipping on the damp leaves. When he was far enough away from camp he fell to the ground, sobs racking his body.

Russetwhisker felt her heart drop at Dandyheart's expression. She felt horrible, but she knew she had to be true to herself. She couldn't be his mate just because Fizzletail wasn't around. "Wait, Dandyheart," she yowled to him, running after him. He was out of sight quickly, but she knew enough to follow his scent trail along the ground. The dampness of the forest made it hard to keep her nose focused, but she persevered, and finally found Dandyheart weeping on the ground. "Dandyheart, stop," she mewed. "I- I never said no. I just don't want you to ask me to be your mate just because Fizzletail isn't." Grr, she was so mad at herself for rambling...

Dandyheart avoided her eyes and stood up. He turned away and started padding away, his shoulders stiff. He heard Tigerstar's voice murmur in his ear, I told you the one you loved would let you down. Dandyheart's vision turned red and he felt his claws slide out. Oh no.

Russetwhisker stared after Dandyheart as he stood up and started off. "Dandyheart, wait." She meowed urgently. She couldn't let him leave- not like this. The ginger she-cat had not yet noticed his unsheathed claws.

"Russetwhisker. Go away. Please,"he growled. The red fog came crowding his vision and he felt an all to familiar feeling, just like his dreams with Tigerstar. Not wanting to hurt her, Dandyheart ran into the forest, splashing into the creek. He ran down it until he was facing the lake. His fur was bristled and his claws itched to tear something apart. Narrowing his eyes he started to wade into the lake.

Russetwhisker stared in concern at her friend as he ran away. What was wrong with him? This... this wasn't normal, was it? She could feel her stomach trying to force back up the prey she had shared with him earlier that day. Worry clenched her belly like an invisible vine around her abdomen. Whatever this was, Dandyheart needed help. She bounded after him, catching up just as he started to wade into the lake.

Hearing Russetwhisker approach, Dandyheart's claws flexed in the wet sand under his paws. He low growl forced it's way through his muzzle. Do it, he heard Tigerstar's ghostly voice murmur in his ear. He shook his head angrily. He wasn't going to hurt her, not ever.

"Dandyheart," Russetwhisker meowed. This wasn't the cat she knew and loved. There was something controlling him, possessing him, you could say. "I- I never said no. Don't let... whatever this is... take over. Please."

Dandyheart felt a tug at his heart as he heard the fright and the love in Russetwhisker's voice. He could beat this. He could. He must. If he didn't well, lets just say that there would be a cat dead, and he did not want that to happen. He saw the ghostly form of Tigerstar coming towards him, his muscles rippling under that striped pelt. Dandyheart felt a fresh feeling of hatred towards him. Before his eyes, Tigerstar started to solidify, his ghostly image shedding for one of flesh and blood. From the corner of his eye Dandyheart saw Russetwhisker's eyes widen in fright. He heard Tigerstar laughing, taunting him.

No... no.... it couldn't be. He was long dead. He had died long before even her grandparents... before her grandparents' parents were even born... but there he was. The muscular, grinning form of Tigerstar was coming into focus. Russetwhisker felt her eyes widening and fear taking over- but she was no coward. Before anyone could do anything to stop her, the ginger she-cat launched herself at the ghostly ShadowClan leader, her claws unsheathed.
